Zora Neale Hurston believed joy was a serious thing and treated it accordingly.
She grew up in Eatonville, Florida — the first incorporated all-Black town in America — where the pine barrens and the oak scrub taught her that ordinary Black life was worth paying close attention to. She never forgot that, carrying it north to study at Barnard and back south again.
