Product Details

Ida B. Wells forged her grief into facts and her facts into a movement.

In 1892, her friend was lynched in Memphis. She picked up her pen. She traveled the South alone, interviewing witnesses, reading records, gathering facts that no one wanted gathered. When she published what she found, they burned her printing press to the ground and threatened her life. She kept writing.

She published A Red Record — names, dates, places, the data of atrocity laid bare. She became one of the first investigative journalists in American history, decades before the discipline had a name.

She risked everything to expose the truth.
